Veteran Knits Holding Legion Event

Owen Sound | by Claire McCormack

A group of knitters is holding a fundraising meet and greet at the Legion in Owen Sound

A local group of knitters are working to help ensure Canadian Veterans, active service members and their families know they are appreciated.

Beth Gendron is the founder of Veteran Knits Appreciation Apparel based in Grey Bruce.

Her group knits blankets, scarves, mitts, vests and other warm items for people in the military community.

Gendron says the cause is very dear to her heart, "We have found that a lot of these veterans that we are giving gifts to, they don't come forward to ask for anything, and we've been finding some of them through other family members and when they do receive something they are so appreciative, they are full of hugs and smiles. "

Gendron says she and a friend came up with the idea four years ago when they knitted some things for their local veterans in Owen Sound.

Since then, they've expanded, "We have reached out to the other legions and found a need that just seemed overwhelming, and we just keep on doing it," says Gendron noting there is another chapter of their knitting group in Penetanguishene.

Gendron says most of the yarn they get is through fundraising and donations of year and they're happy to take more yarn or knitters, "If people don't know what to do with the excess yarn that they have, we can certainly put it to good use."

For anyone who is interested in getting involved, you can find them on Facebook Veteran Knits meets every second Tuesday of the month from 10am until noon at the Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 1049 4th Avenue West, Owen Sound. or you can go to Veteran Knits website online.
