Grey Highlands is looking at adjusting the speed limit on local roads in Eugenia.
Council reviewed a recommendation to implement a 40 kilometre an hour speed zone for the Village of Eugenia during a meeting on Nov. 15.
A report from Manager of Infrastructure Alysha Milliner recommends a total of 55 40 kilometre an hour signs be set up throughout the village indicating where the speed limit starts and where it ends.
The total cost of the project would be over $4,000, going over the previously budgeted amount of $20,000, as the municipality has already spent just over $19,000 for signs year to date.
Mayor Paul McQueen says as it would be extra costs, he asked if the project could be done in two phases.
“There is a cost and I know this is something that we want to move forward and recognize Eugenia as a 40 kilometre an hour zone, I just wonder if that is an option to maybe help in the cost, but still meet our objective,” says McQueen.
McQueen proposed installing the signs indicating the start of the 40 kilometre an hour zone at this point.
The amendment was met with support from other councillors.
Coun. Paul Allen says, “the whole idea here is to slow people down, not get the money for the fines, we don’t get the money anyway.”
The amendment was passed and staff will bring a by-law for council to adopt the speed limit reduction at its next meeting.
