Pregnancy is always an exciting, emotional, busy time for expecting parents, and those emotions are compounded with the arrival of twins, triplets, or more. If you know a family expecting multiples, we’re here to help you support them and make the journey a little less overwhelming.
Be a Listening Ear
The first and simplest step is showing up. Ask how they’re feeling, what they’re worried about, and what they’re most excited for. Being there to listen without judgment is incredibly helpful. If they start expressing their concerns, don’t dismiss their feelings or offer impractical optimism. Validating their feelings—both good and bad—is a huge help emotionally.
Offer Practical Help
Your friends are about to be caring for more than one infant simultaneously—that’s a huge undertaking! If you want your support to have a real impact, offer enthusiastic, practical assistance. These are some of the most helpful ways to do so:
- Bring them freezer-friendly meals.
- Pick up groceries and household essentials for them during your store runs.
- Go over to help with housework.
- Babysit (more on this below!)
Provide Flexible Babysitting
Babysitting is a massive help to new parents, and ones with multiples can use even more support. Instead of just offering your evenings so that Mom and Dad can go on a date, suggest coming by in the middle of the day so they can take a nap or go grocery shopping. Being available to stop by and provide temporary childcare for your friends will mean a lot to them and make a big difference in their mental health.
Celebrate Them!
At the end of the day, the best way to support a family expecting multiples is to celebrate them and make sure they know how much love they have around them. Throw a baby shower to give the soon-to-be parents a time to relax and get excited about this new chapter. Plus, a shower is where your friends can get some practical things they’ll need to care for their newborns. Consider ideas for personalized gifts for multiples that are useful but still have an emotional element.
Your friends are lucky to have you in their lives. Best of luck as you help them through this wonderful new chapter!
