Walkerton’s Community Garden Is Better Than Ever

Brockton | by Robyn Garvey

Accessibility is the focus of this year’s garden which is three times a s big.

It won’t be long before Walkerton’s Community Garden is blooming.

A lot of hard work has gone into make this year’s garden even better than previous years.

The Walkerton Community Garden has been transformed into an accessible garden for all.

This is thanks to the installation of a new permeable surface that keeps the pathway smooth and dry as well as the introduction of more raised garden plots.

The garden which took root in 2012 has just about tripled in size with the addition of more plots this year.

Spokesperson Bruce Davidson says the Community Garden was created for residents who want to garden but have no land of their own to do it in.

With an aging population, Davidson says they decided to make accessibility the focus of this year’s garden.

With more raised beds and the new permeable walking surface that naturally drains allowing the pathway to remain dry and smooth, Davidson says those in wheel chairs, walkers and scooters can now easily access the Community Garden.

Residents are able to rent a plot of land in the Community Garden.

The Brockton Environmental Advisory Committee is hosting a special workshop on Saturday May 25th that the public can sign up for.  (Must be registered ahead - space is limited)

Davidson says the workshop we will focus on the special permeable grid in the garden for those who want to learn more about installing their own permeable grid in their backyard gardens.

There will also be a rooftop garden demonstration on Garden Shed as well as a table top demonstration for the public to take in.

Davidson says with all of the flooding problems taking place across Canada, now may be the ideal time for gardeners to learn more about the specialized grid that drains as well as the benefits of rooftop gardens.

Those interested in participating in the workshop should contact the Municipality of Brockton as space is limited.
