The Coldest Night of the Year walk in Owen Sound has now raised about $17,000 to help those who are homeless and hungry.

On Saturday, (Feb 22nd) about 70 people ranging from kids to adults took part in the walk in support of Safe N' Sound which feeds and clothes people in need.

The goal was to have 100 to 125 people in the walk and raise around $30,000.
Last year's walk surpassed its goal of $20,000 raising $26,000 with 131 walkers.

The idea is that by walking in the chill of the night, participants will come to understand the experience of being on the streets during the winter.

Walk organizer Toni McGregor-Callaghan says the money raised will go to Safe N Sound's general operation.

Safe 'N Sound is a non-profit organization providing support for those in need including meals, computer access, showers, phone access, crisis intervention, and access to emergency clothing and furniture.

It served over 7,000 meals last year and is considered a 'hub' for those in need and a connecting point for local organizations working against poverty.

McGregor-Callaghan says just last week, they served lunch to 75 people each day. The organization takes in food donations from the community to feed those in need, or uses raised money to buy food in the absence of donations.

Meanwhile, she says they're always looking for volunteers to work in the kitchen, on the emergency housing hotline, or in the clothing donation department.

The emergency housing hotline exists to help ensure no one is left without a place to sleep when it's needed.

You can contact Safe N' Sound by calling (519) 470-7233. It is located at 310 8th St East, Owen Sound.
