Ford Government Offers Hydro Rate Relief

Ontario | by Bayshore News Staff

Off peak rates to be charged 24/7 for next 45 days.

The Ontario government led by Doug Ford is introducing temporary hydro rate relief as people bunker down in their homes to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The province announced Tuesday it is investing more than $160-million to provide "off-peak" rates 24/7 for the next 45 days to all time-of-use hydro customers across Ontario.

"We know more and more families are working from home, and we thank them for doing the right thing and stemming this pandemic," says Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, the Associate Energy Minister. "We know people when they're home are going to be using more appliances, more energy in their home."

The temporary "off-peak" rates already took effect as of today, Walker adds.

The Ontario Energy Board is also extending a ban on disconnections until July 31 -- for households and small businesses unable to pay their utility bills.
