2018 Recap

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

As a daily project, on a Monday to Friday basis, I keep a file in my computer and enter a sentence each day to capsulate what I used as my lead or top local story that day.

At the end of the year, I look at that list and am amazed at the depth and variety for sports in our city and region.

Jonah Gadjovich won Gold at the World Junior Hockey Championship, Sauble Speedway got NASCAR certification, Jack Middleton won the Gore Mutual School Boys Curling event and Goalkeeper Shea Tiley was named as the NCAA MVP.

The Quik Lube Attack won the OMHA Championship, The Farrells were selected for induction into the Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame, the Canadian Broomball Championships were in Owen Sound and the Attack went to game 7 at Sault Ste Marie.

The Crescent Club NorthStars won the Minor Lacrosse Tournament, the Satellite Gymnastics Club folded after 4 decades, Chris Neil Day was in Flesherton & Mike Reilly of the Port Elgin Blue Devils hit his 100th career home run.

Owen Torrie at the World U19 Fastball Tournament, Ian MacKay at the World Field Lacrosse Championship, Sean Tippin won the Grey  Bruce Junior Golf Championship and there were four major cross country races including the Ontario Championships at Meaford.

The Brooklin Merchants came to Owen Sound with 4 runners and 2 goalies, the Wiarton Schooners won a game then folded, St Mary's won the Bluewater Football Championship and two members of the Attack; Markus Phillips and Nick Suzuki were selected for the Canadian entry at the World Junior Hockey Championship that started yesterday in British Columbia.

That's just a small sample.

The entire list of our lead sports stories for 2018 are posted at www.bayshorebroadcasting.ca and I'm sure when you scan the list, you'll be certain that 2018 was a very good year for local & regional sports.

I'm Fred Wallace
