The Waiting Game

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

Game 4 of the Ontario Hockey League Championship Series goes tonight in Guelph with the Storm looking to even their best of 7 with the Ottawa 67's at 2 wins apiece.

The 67's won the opening 2 games at TD Place Arena by scores of 7-2 and 4-3.

Apparently, prior to Game 1, the 67's Game Operations staff introduced the Guelph team and then made the Storm stand like props across the blueline for 10 minutes while they rolled highlight videos and pump-up music before finally introducing the 67's lineup for Game 1 of the series.

For Game 3 at Guelph on Monday night, it was " right-back-at-ya " with the Storm & their Game Ops people retaliating.

Tipped off to what was afoot, I watched the clock.

At 6:58 pm the Zamboni left the ice surface of the Sleeman Centre.

By 7:01, the 67's had been introduced and then Ottawa was left to stand across their blueline while the scoreboard pumped the music and rolled the Guelph highlight montage.

At 7:12, the Storm had been introduced, O'Canada was sung and finally there was to be a game after a 14 minute period of waiting.

Ottawa, naturally, freaked about the delay, but in fairness, the 67's apparently pulled the stunt first.

Guelph got their " payback " in the form of the delay prior to Game 3, but in my view, the move & countermove  were childish, kindergarten-like and overall really beneath the dignity of both organizations.

The OHL probably could have prevented this scenario, and I'm sure going forward there will be strict measures in place from the league to make sure it will never transpires in a similar fashion regardless of who or where the Championship involves.

For what it's worth, Guelph won 7-2 in Game 3, and hockey being a superstitious sport, maybe we'll have another pre-game stunt tonight.

I hope not.
