The Crapshoot

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Canadian Hockey League Import Draft is tomorrow.

The Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League have the first pick, followed by the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Owen Sound Attack of the OHL have pick # 26 in this annual, agent oriented, crapshoot..

Through the years Owen Sound has had marvellous success in this draft; Andrej Sekera, Petrus Palmu & Damir Sharipzyanov as a few examples.

Of course, as a counterpoint, Owen Sound has also selected Vasili Filyayev & Richards Berzins.

The point is, you never really know in this complex, and sometimes shady, process what you're really going to get.

Going to this year's CHL Import Draft, Owen Sound's scenario is cloudier,..... if that's possible.

First of all, Owen Sound has the playing rights for Moritz Seider, a German defenceman they selected last year in the Import Draft, a player who was taken in the NHL Entry Draft last weekend in Vancouver sixth overall by Detroit, which was far higher than most projected.

As a result, Seider is now " frozen " on the Attack list, which in essence, assuming Manuel Alberg will not be returning, allows Owen Sound to make 2 selections tomorrow.

The buzz from those connected to the Attack is that they have their two players in line, picks # 26 & # 86, or as one suggests, " already in the bag."

That might very well be the case, but you're never sure who might step up to the plate before your pick and bushwhack your intended selection. ( It's happened before )

Then there's Seider......

Can he make the Red Wings ? ( I doubt that )

Does he stay in the German Pro League ?

Does he play in the American Hockey League at Grand Rapids ?

Or is dispatched to the Owen Sound Attack by the Red Wings for a season of massive ice time & responsibility against players his own age ?

And if so, what becomes of one of the 2 picks to be taken tomorrow ?

The CHL Import Draft is tomorrow, but the conclusion of the process might take months to determine.

I'm Fred Wallace
