Wait Til Next Year

Fred

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

It hasn't hit me yet, but I know it will.

Some time in the days ahead, maybe soon, maybe well into Winter, I'll have an urge to go to Hanover Raceway for a night of harness racing.

The 2019 race season concluded last Saturday night, and truthfully, I was pleasantly impressed by the turnout. There have been times through the years that closing night at Hanover has been sparsely attended. That wasn't the case for the finale on Saturday.

Among the highlights, the Ontario Sire Stakes were on hand for 4 divisions of the 2 year old trotting colts.

Plus, Hanover also handed out their year end awards.

The driver of the year was Ryan Holliday who had both the most wins with 32 on the year and the best winning percentage.

Naturally, Holliday cited winning the 2019 Balanced Image Final with Aphrodite Duke as one of his major highlights of the season.

Bruce Richardson was 2nd in wins this year, his total including a 2nd straight win in Hanover's signature race, " The Dream of Glory " Final driving Knight Angel to the win.

Also of note, Patrick Shepherd was the Trainer of the Year for Hanover Raceway as more than 30 horses under his care were Win-Place or Show finishers.

Finally, the Horse of the Year was " Good and Sweet ", the Claimer of the Year was " Fluentocity " & the Trotter of the Year was " Callie Magoo ".

From my vantage point 2019 at Hanover Raceway was a very good season on a number of levels, and that's why I know someday, sometime, I'll lament that the 2020 season won't get here fast enough.

I'm Fred Wallace
