Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
I admit it, one of the natural beauties of the Christmas season is presents.
And sometimes the fun is knowing what's wrapped up....and sometimes the fun is having NO idea what's in the package.
Such is the case with the Owen Sound Attack who host the Kitchener Rangers tonight in the Ontario Hockey League.
You can stare at the Attack all you want, believe you know what's what, and then see something almost the opposite transpire.
Last weekend the Attack went North to Sault Ste Marie, then Sudbury, then finally to North Bay, and exhibited the expected and the unexpected.
And like Christmas presents, some of the moments were delightful, other moments were somewhat disappointing.
For example, the penalty parade at Sault Ste Marie put the Attack in a hole, but the dagger was a power play blunder that sealed the deal in another road loss.
Yet again, while the road record is sub .500, I do note the Attack have won 3 of their last 4 away from home.
Saturday at Sudbury, Owen Sound won convincingly, rookie Nick Chenard posting a 4-0 shutout.
The curiosity was that 9th place Owen Sound in the West blanked the # 2 team in the East.
Which led to North Bay where the struggling Battalion where the better team for 45 minutes, then had a 1 minute meltdown which allowed the Attack to rally and post a 3-1 victory.
It's notable too, that over the course of 3 road games, Owen Sound gave up just 1 goal against at full & even strength...and in fairness, that goal by Brad Chenier came after a brilliant solo effort by Brandon Coe.
All of which brings us to this evening, the Attack and Rangers.
Owen Sound with a win in the final game before the Christmas Break could jump over both the Rangers and Flint and move into 5th place in the Western Conference.
However, a loss tonight would leave Owen Sound looking hard over their shoulders at Erie, Sault and Sarnia, putting a 10th straight playoff appearance in jeopardy at the midway point of the season.
Game time tonight for the Attack & Rangers is 7 pm
