Shelby & Miles Documented

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Everybody knows I don't squat about auto racing.

Everybody knows that I do rather enjoy movies, especially the theatre experience.

So put out a movie about auto racing & the odds are 50-50 that I'll enjoy it.

On a recent excursion to Cineplex, I took in " Ford vs Ferrari " and came away highly impressed with the movie making and the story, of which I knew nothing of beforehand.

Generally, if you put great performers in a movie, it has a chance to be great.

Matt Damon as race car designer Caroll Shelby and Christian Bale as driver Ken Miles are big names, no question, and they play their parts with believable conviction.

But underneath the star power are terrific portrayals by Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca & Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe,

both of the Ford Motor Company, performances that make the drama fly.

Maybe any group of actors could have succeeded with this story, or this history, because the drama that unfolds over a 3 year time span is intense, climaxing with Ford conquering Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of LeMans only to lose the race on a minor technicality.

So compelling was the movie, so minimal my knowledge of the racing event that it depicted, I went straight to the Internet to find out more about Ferrari, Henry Ford II, Carroll Shelby & Ken Miles.

It's fascinating, and sometimes incredulous, reading but both the movie and the history of those presented create an excellent real life-Hollywood story...without a storybook ending.

I'm Fred Wallace
