Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton has a student population of...... 675.
DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, according to the last number published in 2015, had more than 23,000 people enrolled.
That's quite a contrast, but I'm certain that Billie Martin will make the transition just fine.
Martin recently signed her letter of intent to attend DePaul where she will compete with the Women’s Track & Field team in the throwing disciplines in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference while pursuing a teaching career in secondary school physical education.
I assume Martin will get up to speed quickly, because she's certainly become a prominent name in the Hammer Throw, Shot Put, Discus and indoor Weight Throw in our region and far beyond in short order.
Less than 2 years ago with the Saugeen Track & Field Club under the guidance of Coaches Randy Millar and Glenn Elliott, Martin set an Under 17 3kg Hammer Throw Provincial Record with a mark of 55.25m at the Athletics Ontario Provincial Championships in Windsor and ended that outdoor season ranked 6th in the nation.
A year later at the National Youth Track & Field Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Martin won a Silver medal in the Under 18 3kg Hammer Throw and also turned in a personal best in the Shot Put competing against the top throwers in the country.
Billie Martin is a Grade 12 student at Sacred Heart, which means she still has one last high school season in front of her, quite likely another trip to the OFSAA Championships at Varsity Stadium in June, plus her club season which will feature both Provincial and National Championships.
It's a big jump from Walkerton to Chicago, from Sacred Heart High School to DePaul University, but rapid ascent has been a common trait for thrower Billie Martin, near future member of the DePaul Blue Demons.
