South Bruce Peninsula council will consider awarding a contract to a company that may see garbage trucked out of town.
This past summer, council considered a staff report that said the town’s landfill is nearing capacity. It has about 6.5 years of use left. Staff said 85 per cent of waste is residential and 20 per cent of waste is curbside waste,
Back in July, Engineering and Environmental consultants from GM Blueplan presented a number of options for managing waste, and a report to council discussed the possibility of hiring a company to pick up curbside waste and transport it to another location out of town.
The town has received one bid from Waste Management of Canada Corporation. For trucking waste away for two years, it would be about $1.4 million before HST.
To just pick up the waste to take it to the town landfill, it would cost about $1.02 million.
Staff are recommending the Town go ahead with hauling away garbage because the cost per tonne is lower than what was originally engineers consultants at GM Blueplan estimated and, staff say, would cost significantly less than creating additional landfill capacity.
The item is on Tuesday’s council agenda.
