If you’re feeling crowded in your own home, it might be time to find more space. Here are four ways to make more space in your home. Hard though it may be to believe, you can find and make room anywhere and everywhere. Sometimes it may require a bit more elbow grease and investment, but with the right investment of budget and time, you can make it work.
Declutter With Vigor
Let’s begin with the most obvious and necessary thing to do to make space—get rid of all the excess stuff. It may be hard to give up many of your worldly goods, but it’s necessary. Take stock and decide what you use versus what’s just taking up space. Keep anything you use on a daily or even weekly basis. Retain things that are important, meaning photographs, vital records, valuable pieces of art, and things that you truly enjoy. Everything else you can get rid of it! Trash it, donate it, or give it away. Just get it out of the house.
Think Vertically
When we think of storage space in our homes, we often think of flat planes. Look up from the floor and see all that space between a room’s perimeter and the ceiling. That’s an amazing amount of space suitable for floating shelves and other means of storage against the wall. And don’t neglect the ceiling, either. You can store a bike or another large item by installing hooks in the beams hidden under the drywall.
Organize Your Closets
Closets tend to get overlooked for their space possibilities. People mostly throw things in there and forget about them until they need them again. Adding extra shelves or hanging storage boxes from a closet rod grants more space for storing clothing or games. Stacking storage containers for things you might need later (say, sweaters for the cold weather season) can also make better use of the closet space. Finally, if you have the budget, there are multiple benefits to having a custom-made closet with extra space.
Create a Bedroom Loft
If you remember dorm life in college, you might recall the benefits of building a bed loft. Raising your bed up creates more space and flow in your bedroom. Lofted areas are great for adding an elevated workspace to the room, a home entertainment area, and other ideas. The freed-up space below is ideal for extra shelving.
Those are just four ways to make more space in your home. Take the time to plot and plan, and you might be surprised at how much space you can find!
